Star Ratings vs. Safety Ratings

Understanding the difference.

It's important to understand what each of these ratings means while reading reviews.

Star Ratings

When writing a review, every community member will be prompted to leave ratings for Safety, Taste and Variety. These three ratings combine to form the Overall Rating of a listing.

Star ratings are shown as yellow stars and include ratings for both Taste (how the food tasted) and Variety (variety of gluten free offerings).

Both of these ratings combine with the Safety rating to form the Overall Rating for a listing.

Safety Ratings

Safety ratings are shown as red hearts and indicate the reported safety of an establishment.

When choosing a Safety rating, take into consideration the establishment's willingness and ability to avoid cross contact with gluten. If you're not sure how to decide this, you can learn more on our page about asking questions while dining out.

The Safety rating combines with both the Taste and Variety ratings to form the Overall rating for a listing.

Reading Them Together In The App

When searching through listings, each one will show the Overall star rating and the Safety rating.

The only listings that do not show a Safety rating are those that are Dedicated Gluten-Free OR those which have not yet received a Safety rating.

When browsing reviews on any listing, you will see an individual's Overall star rating at the top of the review. Below the review, you will see how this was calculated by the individual's ratings for Safety, Taste and Variety.

Some community members prefer not to rate Safety if they aren't sure or if they don't typically have to worry about cross-contact, so they may just rate Taste and Variety.
